"Wümmet" 2023: How the grape harvest went at the organic winery
From the beginning of September to the end of October, the grapes were harvested in the vines of the Rebhalde
winery. A harvest that brought some highs and lows, but ultimately turned out quite satisfactorily.
In the fall, from around the beginning of September, every winemaker enters the decisive phase: the "Wümmet" begins. The grape harvest at the Rebhalde
winery began on September 5. We brought in the Sylvaner variety and the first Räuschling - beautiful grapes, perfectly balanced in terms of quantity and quality. After this day, however, patience was required again. The reason for this was the last weekend in August, when we had over 100mm of rainfall within a short space of time. And this rain was absorbed by the grapes. The berries inflated like balloons. Some of them burst, others had torn grape skins and the berries were slowly pushing each other off. As a result, we had to interrupt the harvest and wait for the water to evaporate.
Warm weather on Lake Zurich, intensive harvest time
From September 11, the harvest began with full force and zest for action. The first grapes harvested were Riesling-Sylvaner. After a few days, we were faced with new challenges: Due to the warm weather and a longer dry phase, the ripening phase of the grapes accelerated. As a result, we changed the harvest times. In order to make faster progress, we started earlier in the morning and finished the harvest later. Things also progressed well in the cellar. The wines started fermenting quickly this year and therefore fermented well - spontaneously as usual.
Harvesting in the sunshine is pleasant. However, the beautiful fall weather also had one major disadvantage. Due to the temperature, the grapes arrived at the press very warm in the morning. That's why we cooled down all the press musts immediately after pressing to ensure quality.
Rebhalde organic winery with positive results After the harvest of the white grapes was completed, we moved on to the red grapes. Here, too, the heavy August rain had left its mark. As a result, the harvest volumes for varieties such as Pinot Noir were below expectations. We harvested the last grapes in the last week of October. They were pressed at the beginning of November.
On the whole, we can look back on an average but good harvest. There was no excessive yield, but the cellar is still full. The quality is also excellent. We are already looking forward to tasting the new vintage with you.
